Bizet showed a great musical talent as a child. By the age of 9 he had entered the Paris Conservatoire and went on to win every major prize for piano, organ and composition. In 1857, when he was 19 yrs old he won the Prix de Rome. Bizet is probably most well known for his opera "Carmen" based around Prosper Merim?e's short novel. The opera, however was a failure on it's first performance on 3rd March 1875, just before his death. He completed the 4th and final act in 1874 and he died 4 hours after it's 33rd performance from the second of two major heart attacks. "Carmen" soon became known as a masterpiece for it's portrayal of emotions.
Other work includes his "Symphony in C Major" which reflected the influence of Gounod with whom he had befriended in 1856. His first opera was "The Pearl Fishers" which was a success. Other operas, both comic and dramatic in style followed, some of which were never completed.
